Best practice...but why...?
We spend our working lives advising people of best practice for using assistive technology: "Use a wireless listening device", "put it through a test box", "set it up like this", "signal to noise ratio"....
A few years ago we realised how rarely people actually got the opportunity to listen for themselves. To really listen and to HEAR the benefit.
Acceptance and adoption of technology is vastly increased if a user and the people around them have been shown the benefit
This is particularly true of hearing parents, siblings and friends. These pieces of equipment arrive in their lives and they're told that they help their loved one who is deaf but do they really understand how and why? In general, no, they don't.
Teachers of Deaf Children, with their huge workloads, often don't get the chance to demonstrate to their students or their families how a wireless listening system will help.
What does a classroom sound like to a deaf child with and without hearing aids and assistive listening systems?
Letting people hear the difference
Short-form videos are accessible and impactful
Realising that teachers were over-stretched, we have been focussing on putting our knowledge and experience into a video format and putting them online. We've been working with Phonak and some of our customers to make the best videos we can.
Our videos are short snippets, easily digestible visual with audio demonstrations.
Easy to share
We put all of our videos on YouTube and share them to social media. This means they can be shared with parents, colleagues, friends, family. They're publicly available and totally free to use.
What we want is to spread best practice, help troubleshooting and increase awareness, not just that these systems exist but the very real benefits that they can bring in different situations.
Meeting people in the online spaces they're familiar with eg. social media, YouTube, helps break down barriers and increases reach and accessibility.
